Grate place and people who made that.
Hallvarður súgandi is a historical figure mentioned in Landnámabók (The Book of Settlements) and Grettis saga. He is recognized as the first settler of the Súgandafjörður region on the Westfjords peninsula in northwestern Iceland. His nickname, "súgandi," refers to the strong winds, powerful sea currents, and large waves characteristic of the area, indicating a deep connection to the land he chose for settlement.

Hallvarður was among the Norwegian settlers who migrated to Iceland from Norway during the 9th and 10th centuries, establishing new communities across the island.

To honor his legacy, the local historical society, Fornminjafélag Súgandafjarðar, initiated a project to construct a replica of a traditional Viking longhouse (landnámsskáli) in Súgandafjörður. The design is based on a longhouse excavated by archaeologists in Arnarfjördur, dating back to the settlement period.

The project, which spanned six years, aimed to faithfully recreate the living conditions of Iceland's first settlers. The construction of the house employs traditional materials, such as turf (klambra) and wood, using ancient building techniques. The walls are built from layers of turf, while a wooden structure supports the roof, reflecting the typical architecture of early Icelandic longhouses, designed to withstand the harsh climate.

The project is not only a reconstruction of historical architecture but also a community effort to engage local residents in the building process and educate people about the ancient Icelandic ways of life.

This unique initiative combines archaeological research with the practical application of skills and a passion for preserving Icelandic heritage.
