In una giornata di pioggia e neve questo museo ci ha fatto passare un pomeriggio memorabile. Da visitare con pazienza e rispetto per il lavoro, questo non è un museo, ma un inno alla popolazione di questo paese divenuto il centro del commercio delle aringhe, nonché uno degli artefici della loro quasi estinzione...ma vabbè...ottimo l'allestimento delle navi che sembrano sospese sull'acqua, fantastica la possibilità di salire a bordo di uno dei pescherecci e visitare tutti gli interni con gli arredi originali...veramente emozionante toccare con mano la vita vera dei pescatori. Complimenti, consiglio vivamente la visita se siete da queste parti, vale il viaggio anche se non piove!

We took a tour that included time at these museums as part of the trip. I have to confess - this was not something we were particularly interested in and expected it to just be a 10 minute bore...boy, were we WRONG. This place was GREAT - there are multiple buildings, lovingly maintained and curated to give you a great feel of the main industry in Iceland many years ago - this covers the living conditions, the work, the boats (they have multiple actual boats hidden in one of the buildings), the fish preparation, and more. The owners was there and was very friendly and they have nice restroom facilities. Overall, we were all blown away and really enjoyed it and wished we could have had MORE time to spend here. Excellent museum - don't miss it!!!

This museum was very fascinating. Learned about how the herring industry transformed the Iceland economy and introduced women's and worker's rights. There are actual restored buildings as part of the exhibit. Amazing to see the actual buildings as they were used. Our guide was excellent and our tour was topped off by having herring samples on rye bread along with Icelandic aquavit. Just a stellar experience.

Fun museum and super interesting if you like fishing or just local history. They have preserved A LOT of equipment from the herring era it’s really impressive. The boat house really feels like your standing on the dock with the hustle and bustle of an active fishing port. Lots of good informational signs. I spent about an hour here and 2 hours is the max you’d need.

Toto bylo bez nadsázky nejkrásnější muzeum jaké jsem kdy viděla. Tak bohatá expozice, tolik úžasných předmětů, báječné využití prostoru. Všechny budovy muzea byly opravdu skvělé. Doporučuji využít lístek i do Folk Music muzea, které je také fantastické a je tam báječný průvodce.
V první budově The Herring muzea byla dost tma, neškodilo by více světla.

Really fun museum in this once prosperous herring town. The whole museum consists of three main building, including salt station (the red house where you can purchase ticket), fish factory and boat house.
Recommended stay time: 1.5hour
The exhibition on the first floor of salt station mainly tell the history about herring fishing. You can go upstair but mind your head and there can you see the life from the herring era. I can tell everything is carefully arranged.
Fish factory nearby show some parts of the fish oil and fish meal industry. You can smell the odor from that time.
Several fishing boats laid besides the "dock" in boathouse. Some of them are accessible.

Ein wirklich schön und sehr informativ angelegtes Museum. Über drei Gebäude und ein Außengelände wird die Geschichte des Herringfangs und dessen Verarbeitung erzählt. Zahlreiche Exponate, Schiffe und Werkzeuge und nicht zuletzt eine intakte Fischmehlfabrik sollten unbedingt besucht werden.

Worth a stop. Several buildings are along the road and you can park at either end and start. Only 3 buildings were open when I was there. Great look at the majestic herring industry that was along the coast. Old photos, historic rooms and offices that look like no one has touched them in 100 years. Access boats and living quarters. Tells the story in brief, just enough for me in my stop over driving the coast.
